For a Plain weave structure, normally two tappet are required. they are normally mounted on the bottom shaft. but in case of a twill weave structure in 4 ends and 4 pick repeat so we required 4 tappet. they are mounted on counter shaft.
- To control a maximum of eight or ten heald shaft in tappet shedding.
- To change the speed of the tappet so can be woven fabric design repeating up to eight or ten pick per repeat.

Along with this the gearing that drive the counter shaft on which shedding tappet are mounted , is also to changed to give the correct speed ratio between the counter shaft and bottom shaft .
changing the tappet & gear wheel require stopping of the weaving machine for longer time, thus losing production.
